ENTERGY COMMUNITY
PARTNERSHIP GRANT 2010
Kountze Public Library was awarded $530 from the Entergy Community Partnership Grant
in July. The funds will be used to purchase a new Circulation Computer for the
Circulation desk. Entergy has partnered with organizations such as the Friends of Kountze Public
Library for a number of years and has made community projects a reality by
giving away thousands of dollars in grant funds. The Circulation Computer will be
in place and ready for use by the end of this summer. Elaine Allums, Friends
president, commented, “We would like to publicly express our thanks to Entergy
for this award. Entergy grants are essential in helping our library maintain
state of the art equipment.”
FOUNDATION FOR SOUTHEAST TEXAS GRANT
2010
The Friends of
Kountze Public Library Organization was the proud recipient of a grant from the
Foundation for Southeast Texas. On April 29. an awards ceremony was held in the
Auditorium of the Foundation's building in Beaumont where the $1,778 check was
received by Friends Treasurer, Joe Ann Dixon. The grant will pay for a new
automation server for the library.
Laverne Crysel, Library Director and Friends of Kountze Public Library would
like to express their gratitude to the Foundation for this grant that will
enable them to continue to serve the community's technology needs.
The Foundation for Southeast Texas is led by a board of 30 leaders from
Hardin, Jefferson and Orange counties. It was established in late 1996 to
respond to continuously changing and emerging community needs. It is different
from other foundations in that it can address areas of concern including: arts
and culture, preservation, education, health, social services, youth, the
elderly, economic development, faith groups and civic affairs. According to its
website, "The mission of the Foundation for Southeast Texas shall be to
make a positive difference in the quality of life in the area by encouraging
philanthropic gifts and by assisting donors in achieving their charitable goals
through the professional management and considered and caring distribution of
such gifts."
Since 1998, the Foundation has granted almost two million dollars to
nonprofits in Southeast Texas and to other national nonprofits who serve their
communities through designated, donor-advised and unrestricted funds. The
Foundation also provides another service for nonprofits. It owns an attractive,
newly refurbished building in downtown Beaumont. Office suites are leased to
nonprofit organizations at below market rates. The lease includes wireless
internet access and the use of three meeting rooms with state of the art
furnishings for conferences, meetings and training."
LOAN STAR LIBRARIES GRANT FY
2010
Kountze Public Library will receive a Loan Star
Libraries Grant in the amount of $5,500 for FY10. Loan Star Grants are the
direct state aid program from the state of Texas to its public libraries. This
is the 9th year of the program, which is administered by Texas State Library and
Archives Commission.
Since 2002, the Texas Legislature has made it possible to distribute $19.4
million to Texas public libraries through the Loan Star Libraries grant program.
In 2008, 540 public libraries across the state are sharing $5.65 million in
funds distributed by the Commission, an increase of
$3 million over 2007.
Libraries can use the grant funding however they wish, with few exceptions, to
meet the needs of their communities. According to State Librarian Peggy D. Rudd,
this flexibility is a major factor in the program’s success. She says, “Local
leaders know best how to maximize limited funds to meet specific local needs.
The structure of Loan Star Libraries provides a great deal of latitude for
judgment while providing accountability for the use of state funds. This
partnership between the State of Texas and local governments is a winning
combination that has led to some tremendous strides in library services across
the state.”
Visitors to the library can soon expect to see additional library materials in
different formats such as audiovisual, including movies and books on CD and
print, fiction and nonfiction books for children, teens and adults.
In order to better benefit the families of our community and service area, the
Grant funds will also be used for Texas Summer Reading Club performers.
Loan Star funding provides the opportunity to reach as many people as possible
with quality, modern library services.
