Why do we need a Friends Group?
Libraries of all sizes benefit from the energy and enthusiasm of a local Friends of the Library group. Essentially, a Friends group can be defined as active volunteers who are independently organized to support, promote, improve and expand local library services..
Friends are recognized as one of the most important citizen groups in the library world. Time and time again Friends have brought benefits to libraries as a result of the activities and representation of community needs and interests.

What do Friends Do?
Raise public awareness of library services by presenting or sponsoring cultural and educational programs such as Summer Reading, story times, author appearances, community events and seminars.
Friends also:

Participate in parades to represent the library

Decorate the library at Christmas and host the yearly Santa party

Host library dinners and lunch for library workshops

Conduct book sales and other fund raising activities to provide money for projects or items not covered by the library's operating budget

Communicate the library's financial needs to the governing body or the voters

Advocate for increased library services and funding

Organize and/ or provide volunteers for work on specific or ongoing library projects

Support new library services

Recognize exceptional performance of individual library staff members

Friends Projects include paying for library flowerbed maintenance, funding the painting of the inside and outside of the library and co-hosting the children's Santa Program. Friends also provide volunteers to assist with Summer Reading Club. They provide prizes and in past years purchased tee shirts and backpacks for participants.

HOW TO BECOME A FRIENDS MEMBER
Friends are happy to welcome new members at any time. There is a place for everyone to make a positive difference in support of the library.
Applications for Friends membership are available in the foyer of the library. Completed applications may be turned in at the Circulation Desk. Everyone is cordially invited to attend a Friends meeting on the first Tuesday of each month. Friends meet at 4PM in the Bevil Meeting Room of the Library. Meetings usually last less than an hour.
